Two LSU student-athletes involved in a fatal Scotlandville shooting Saturday afternoon were released without charges on Saturday night after being taken in for questioning, according to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.
A source confirmed to The Advocate that one of the student-athletes was LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Dellenger confirmed that the other LSU player was walk-on Jared Small.
One person was shot and killed in the backseat of a truck and the two student-athletes immediately called 911 and waited at the scene, according to BRPD spokesman L’Jean McKneely. The victim was not an LSU student-athlete.
On Sunday morning, BRPD told Brody Miller of NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune that the victim was Kobe Johnson, 18. The two players were selling Johnson an electronic item when Johnson tried to take the items after pulling out a weapon. Johnson was then shot multiple times.
“Right now our concern is for the safety and well-being of our student-athletes,” said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva in a news release. “They have been involved in a traumatic incident and we have made our counselors available to assist immediately.”
