Ice Cube, one of rap music’s most influential figures, is making his debut in the Baton Rouge music scene tonight at The Varsity Theatre.
Ice Cube’s career took off 20 years ago with the notorious West Coast gangsta rap group N.W.A., and the rapper has gained even more success in his solo efforts with multi-platinum and hit albums.
Chris Lundgren, talent buyer and marketing director for The Varsity, said Ice Cube will bring an interesting dynamic to the venue.
“We try to bring in a variety of music to the Varsity Theatre,” he said. “And, to bring in one of the pioneers of rap music, it’s a great addition to our spring lineup.”
Lundgren said he’s looking forward to the show even though he’ll be working.
“Personally, every show is work, so I’ll be running around and unable to enjoy the show,” he said. “However, I think everyone in attendance is going to love the opportunity to see such an icon up close and personal in an intimate venue.”
The event is something all students should attend because experiencing a rap legend in real life is a once in a lifetime opportunity, according to Lundgren.
“Why wouldn’t they enjoy it?” he said. “Musical tastes and preferences are subjective, but based on sales for this show and Snoop Dogg, I would say it’s a popular event to attend.”
Michael Schmitt, computer science freshman, said he is a huge fan of Ice Cube.
“His music is just raw and has been since the beginning,” he said.
Meredith Stevens, English sophomore, said she was raised on Ice Cube’s music and plans to attend the show because she has an appreciation for his music and film careers.
“I learned not to worry about Friday, next Friday, or Friday after next,” she said. “He taught me everything I know.”
