The Board of Regents unanimously approved James Purcell as the next Commissioner of Higher Education Thursday in its regular meeting, according to a news release.
Purcell will retire his current position as the Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, which he has held since 2008.
Purcell said he is anxious to lead Louisiana through a transformational period in the history of postsecondary education, the release said.
