LSU redshirt freshman Jodi Calloway was tabbed as the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading a Tiger defense that allowed just two goals in three games last week.
Calloway was the Defensive MVP of the four-team LSU Invitational this weekend as LSU held its two previously unbeaten opponents, Oregon and No. 13 Pepperdine to one combined goal in two matches.
Pepperdine standout freshman forward Lynn Williams, who had accounted for four goals and four assists in the Waves’ first seven games, was shut down by Calloway, who was her primary defender, and failed to record a point for the first time in 2011. The Waves had also scored 15 goals through seven matches, but were held to just one goal in a 1-1 draw by LSU’s defense.
Calloway was the breakout performer for a defensive unit that spurred LSU to a 2-0-1 week and gave up only 10 shots on goal and one corner kick in the process.
