After a shooting at the Cottages Apartments over the weekend left two people dead, students such as Cottages resident Ester Saavedra are questioning their safety.
“At one point I remember hearing girls screaming and I was like ‘what’s going on’,” Saavedra said. “I just thought it was drunk girls acting up then I wake up the next morning to find out there was a shooting right outside of my cottage.”
Saavedra says she is disappointed with the Cottage’s management, as they have done little to make residents feel safe after the tragedy.
“They’re handling this situation very poorly in my opinion,” Saavedra said. “Because of that I am looking into moving out.”
The Cottage’s management would not comment.
However, students who signed leases to live there next semester say they are regretting their decision.
“I signed a lease to live at the Cottages a couple months ago before the shooting,” future resident Kristen Bertel said. “Now I’m pretty nervous about it. My parents are worried too.”
The Cottages has shown students that a gated community can not ensure their safety. To stay safe, students should keep their doors locked and never walk alone at night.
