LSU’s men’s golf team propelled themselves to a second-place finish at the Aggie Invitational after a seven-under-par performance in the event’s final round Sunday.
Senior Zach Wright and freshman Luis Gagne tied for a team-high, one-under throughout the three rounds and finished fourth among all players. The squad finished with a final score of two-over par.
The Tigers entered Sunday in third, but quickly dropped to fourth after Arkansas’ golfers opened with an impressive start. The Razorbacks cooled down to finish with an even score for the day, and LSU’s clubs heated up moving up to third place before the back nine holes of the final round.
North Texas, which began the final round in second, collapsed down the stretch. UNT shot eight-over par in the determining round dropping to fourth, opening the door for Wright and company.
Oklahoma State took the team trophy besting the field, shooting an even-par throughout the Invitational. All five Cowboy golfers finished in the top 32 of the 81-man field.
Arkansas’ sophomore Alvaro Ortiz finished atop of the individual leaderboard for his first collegiate victory.
The event concluded what has been an impressive spring season for the Tigers. They have finished top-two in four of the five tournaments, and have nearly two weeks off before the Southeastern Conference Championships at St. Simons Island, Georgia, which begin on April 15.
LSU will enter the league event as the conference defending champions and one of the favorites, as the third-highest ranked SEC squad in the golfstat.com top-25. The event will be the last before the Tigers attempt to defend their national title when NCAA regionals start on May 16.
