The No. 11 LSU softball team bounced back with a 9-1 victory against Southeastern Louisiana at North Oak Park in Hammond on Wednesday.
The Tigers (30-12, 5-10 Southeastern Conference) improved its record in midweek games to 8-0, and are now 24-0 when they score first in a contest.
Scoring with runners on base was an issue for the Tigers last weekend, as they stranded 25 runners against then-No. 16 Kentucky, but LSU had no problems scoring tonight.
Which made LSU coach Beth Torina happy.
“I liked seeing the offense swing the bat, but I really liked our attitude and approach,” Torina said. “From the minute we got to the field, they were being positive, trying to fire each other up. That’s something we started on Monday and carried that into today.”
Back-to-back scores in the first and second inning gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. The Lions tacked on a run in the fifth to cut its deficit to 2-1, but the next inning the Tigers’ bats came alive, again.
Six runs in the top of the sixth helped the Tigers take control of the game, which boosted them to an 8-1 lead. LSU would add one more run in the top of the seventh to stretch its lead to 9-1.
Senior first baseman Sandra Simmons had a career-high four hits along with two RBI’s, and paced the Tigers to collecting a total of 12 hits against the Lions.
LSU junior second baseman Constance Quinn had her ninth multi-hit game of the season, slashing two of three with two RBIs and a run.
Junior pitcher Baylee Corbello started her first game in the circle since Mar. 8 for LSU, and pitched a five-hit complete game on Wednesday.
Corbello (6-0) stymied the Lion’s lineup, and notched eight strikeouts on 131 pitches.
“The one thing she has done is continue to work,” Torina said. “Bailey has put the time in during practice and has done everything we’ve asked her to do. So she showed she was prepared for the day and did a good job.”
