Facing Florida for the fifth time in the past week, LSU (42-18) wasn’t able to beat the Gators (47-12), as the Tigers fell 1-0.
For the second straight season, Florida eliminated the Tigers in the semifinal round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
A ninth inning rally came up for the Tigers after junior shortstop Kramer Robertson reached first base with a leadoff single, but Robertson was left stranded after a strikeout, ground out and a pop out would end the game.
Neither team was able to muster up much offense, but Florida freshman third baseman Jonathan India’s RBI double was the difference in the contest.
LSU wasn’t able to figure out Florida sophomore pitcher Scott Moss all day. Moss (3-0) pitched six shutout innings, surrendering three hits and striking out seven.
In total, the Tigers struck out 11 times, the most of their five matchups. Five strikeouts was their previous high against the Gators.
The loss puts a damper on the Tigers’ chances of hosting a NCAA Super Regional, but the work they’ve done in the SEC Tournament can still put them in the conversation for a national seed.
Wins against Florida and Mississippi State, who currently have the No. 2 and No. 11 RPI nationally, according to the NCAA’s official RPI rankings, adds to the resume of a team that sits at No. 6 in the country in RPI ranking and has won 14 of its last 16 games.
The regional hosts for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday at 7:30 pm. via the NCAA Baseball official Twitter account.
