The 2016 LSU baseball season could not have started in a more exciting fashion than it did in Alex Box Stadium on Friday night as junior Jordan Romero comes up big for the Tigers to give them their first win of the season.
The Tigers found themselves in a 12-inning marathon with the Cincinnati Bearcats in a game that lasted a grueling 3 hours and 59 minutes.
LSU struggled to hit in the early innings but with the resilience of this young team, strung together some late inning hits to earn the season opening victory over the Bearcats 6-5.
Junior left handed pitcher Jared Poche’ got the start for LSU and had been in control for most of the game as he finished with 6.2 innings of work giving up 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 earned runs.
Cincinnati was the first to get on the board as senior catcher Woody Wallace grounded into a fielder’s choice to score sophomore first baseman Connor McVey in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead
It didn’t take long for freshman right fielder Antoine Duplantis to make an impact as he singled up the middle to score junior left fielder Beau Jordan and tie the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning.
Poche’ at this point had retired 15 straight batters before opening up the game for the Bearcats in the 7th inning.
The Bearcats reclaimed the lead when sophomore center fielder Treg Haberkorn hit a 2 RBI double to left center to take a 3-1 lead.
But this young Tiger team showed that even though they are inexperienced they are very resilient as junior second baseman Kramer Robertson scored on an infielder chopper from junior centerfielder Jake Fraley to close the gap 3-2.
LSU eventually tied the game up in the most dramatic form possible as pinch hitting junior Jordan Romero came up with a clutch single to center field with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
All the momentum that LSU had built up in the last two innings seemed to be lost as the Bearcats came roaring back scoring 2 runs in the top of the 10th.
These runs came from an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Manny Rodriguez and a bases loaded walk on Kyle Mottice to give Cincinnati the 5-3 lead.
LSU found themselves in a situation quite like the 9th as they scored 2 runs with 2 outs to tie the game up for the third time, 5-5.
LSU’s freshman came up big in this game as the first run in the 10th was scored off of Brody Wofford RBI single to score Bryce Jordan from third.
The other came from shortstop Cole Freeman who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Wofford.
In the 12th and final inning the Tigers took their first lead of the game and scored the winning run off of a Jordan Romero blooper to right field to score freshman O’Neal Lochridge.
LSU escapes with the victory and wins their 15th straight season home opener.
Alden Cartwright got the win for the Tigers as he went 2 shut out innings with 2 strikeouts and a walk, while David Orndorff recorded the loss for the Bearcats.
LSU will play game two with Cincinnati on Saturday at 2 o’clock as the Tigers send Sophomore Alex Lange to the mound to take on the Bearcats.
