Mike VI, the University’s live tiger mascot, was euthanized Tuesday in his night house. Mike’s death came shortly after he was moved into hospice care Monday morning.
According to the press release, there will not be a formal memorial service for Mike VI. The release said fans are encouraged to share their memories, stories and photos on social media using #MikeVI.
Mike was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma over the summer and received radiation treatment. Over the summer, a press release said the tiger might live 1-2 years with the treatment.
Last Wednesday, LSU Veterinarian David Baker held a press conference after a press release announced Mike’s cancer had spread to his legs and lungs. At the press conference, Baker said Mike might have 1-2 months to live, though he would be euthanized before he succumbed to the cancer.
Mike VI made his debut on Oct. 6, 2007, at a home game against the University of Florida, which LSU was slated to play this past weekend. Baker announced last week that the school was searching for Mike VII.
