The cool autumn night was the perfect complement to Paper Route kicking off their latest tour, “The Really Emotional Tour,” which debuted singles from their newest album, “Real Emotion.”
The Nashville-based trio jump started their tour in Baton Rouge Thursday night at Spanish Moon.
The band comprises of members JT Daly, lead vocals, keyboards and percussion; Chad Howat, bass, piano and programming; and Nick Aranda, guitar and vocals. Though Paper Route has headlined for iconic bands such as Passion Pit and Paramore, the artists are making waves far greater than being the opening act.
Opening the concert, HalfNoise engaged the crowd with their vibrant energy and groovy sounds. The members excelled in interacting with and warming up the small crowd for the main attraction, Paper Route, which a few attendees drove nine hours to see perform.
According to lead singer Daly, the band’s genre of music can be difficult to categorize because they “use a lot of random sounds — a lot of samplers and a lot of the things you hear on [their] recordings, the sounds are very meticulously crafted.”
“We’re very particular about how they are engineered, or they are completely wrecked,” Daly said.
The craftsmanship of their music became apparent after watching the band perform to the intimate crowd gathered in the dim bar space.
The connection between the band and those present could be seen and felt as eclectic concert-goers sang and danced along to the band’s funky, alternative indie rock sounds.
As the opening song came to a close, nostalgic feelings swept the room. Daly’s voice crescendoed to ethereal highs while bandmates contributed their own levels of complexity, creating a melodic masterpiece.
Performing songs from previous albums, the band gave fans a complete Paper Route experience.
“Oh, I didn’t expect to hear songs I remember singing in 2004. It is amazing to see how far these men have come and their growth is apparent on stage,” said University freshman Laura Johnson.
