Republican Donald Trump won the LSU student body mock election with 47.5 percent of the students voting, while Democrat Hillary Clinton received 32.7 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson earned 13.6 percent of the student vote.
Student government president Zack Faircloth announced the results Tuesday night at the close of a two-day LSU symposium on race and democracy.
The mock election was part of LSU’s “Moment or Movement: A National Dialogue on Identity, Empowerment, and Justice for All” symposium, which focuses on race relations in Louisiana and getting students to vote.
The voting took place over the previous week.
Mari Morgan, an environmental engineering freshman from Birmingham, Alabama, said she voted for Clinton, though she was not surprised with Trump’s victory by a wide margin.
“I was surprised that Gary Johnson got a lot of support,” Morgan said. “I kind of expected Trump to win by more.”
Yewande Tinuvu, a merchandising sophomore from Opelousas, said she did not necessarily expect Trump to win by as much as he did, though she did expect him to win.
“I am a little surprised that Hillary had such a wide gap,” Tinuvu said. “I thought she would have been 42 to his 47. I always thought that they were neck and neck, or at least I would hope.”
