Local performing arts dance group CKA: Currently Known As will be debuting their second project, “Enough,” on July 15 at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.
“Enough” will be a year-long affair, with each monthly installment picking up where the previous one left off. The series will explore the concept of “enough” through the group’s pseudo-contemporary dance style.
“It partially grew from a place where we had enough of not doing what we wanted to be doing, and then created a process that felt like it could be enough to satisfy our souls,” CKA co-founder and LSU Dance Program instructor Mina Estrada said.
Formed in late 2015, CKA currently consists of Mina Estrada, CoCo Loupe, Rikki Willis, Anna Schwab and Aliza Rudavski.
The collective’s first project, “Turf,” was a guerilla-style performance that the group presented in public areas throughout Baton Rouge. “Turf” ran throughout the fall of 2015.
“We draw and dream and spitball ideas and keep a pretty healthy record of all of the ideas and concepts that intrigue us,” Estrada said. “Then we make movement, sound and spatial choices, and so on.”
Music for the evening will be provided by Travis Long and Dominic Palmintier of Dos Manegas, Moxy Martinez and Decaf Percussion, who will be performing a mix of composed and improvised works.
In addition to the dancers and musicians, attendees of the July 15 presentation of “Enough” can expect fried seafood, beverages and a room filled with the artwork of abstract painter Jono Wright.
Estrada also shared some words of advice for any LSU students pursuing a similar hobby or career.
“If you’re pursuing it as a hobby, my advice is to do it whenever it feels good and whenever you can make room for it in your life,” she said. “I suppose that’s the same advice I’d give to someone who was choosing some type of performance art as their career, but I would also suggest that they cultivate a healthy academic knowledge of their chosen discipline, whether that’s a degree or extensive, immersive experiences in that field.”
