LSU is back in session, and a new year means we welcome a new group of freshmen onto campus. Freshman year can be tough, but there are plenty of people on campus who have advice for our new tigers.
“First day of class, after class, talk to your professor,” said LSU Senior David Allen. “Let them know your name. Let them know that you’re interested in that class…that you’re eager to learn.”
After the first week of class, some students find it difficult to maintain their enthusiasm for class and start skipping. Sleeping in has its perks, but attending class provides benefits that sleep might not.
“Definitely go to class, number one thing,” said LSU Sophomore Mackenzie Wright. “Because a lot of professors give you credit just for showing up and participating.”
LSU also helps new students through a wide variety of programs, including FYE (First Year Experience). FYE hosts events across campus intended to help new students feel more at home at LSU.
“Freshmen seem to worry about making friends, fitting in, finding their place here, feeling at home,” said Lexi Verret, FYE Marking & Communication Graduate Assistant.
Verret explained that during FYE’s Welcome Week, FYE plays host to over 90 events, where students can test out how they want to get involved on campus.
FYE also assists students, like Camila Valenzuela, who transfer to LSU from other colleges and universities.
“They were always like really helpful when I was trying to get things started in the summer,” said Valenzuela. “I really appreciated that.”
Getting involved can help first year LSU students find their place on campus, and FYE provides students with the resources they need to be successful during their college career.
“The one way…to kind of combat your home sickness is to make LSU your home, and one way to do that is get involved, make friends, and if that’s something you’re not comfortable with, come to FYE because we can help with that,” said Verret.
