English trio Daughter released its second album “Not to Disappear” on Jan. 15, and the synth heavy record does not stray from the band’s typical style.
Daughter offers little variation in theme from its 2013 debut album “If You Leave.” However, lack of experimentation does not diminish from the skilled instrumentation and raw authenticity heard in the band’s sophomore album.
Beginning with the first of ten tracks “New Ways,” the music washes over the listener, foreshadowing the remaining numbers with a haunted, somber tone. Lead singer Elena Tonra’s soft voice croons bleak, cynical lyrics, giving the dark chorus a creepily addictive tone.
Tonra places continued emphasis on solitude and detachment from her surroundings, singing “I feel so numb in this kingdom.” Her attitude is withdrawn, hollow. The presence of a few faster-paced songs like “No Care” and “Fossa” help drive the record forward.
“Not to Disappear” isn’t quite as good as “If You Leave,” but by no means does Daughter disappoint.
The blending of sounds on each track is especially interesting as Daughter meshes classical and electronic genres together to form a melancholy, techno feel. The compelling, hypnotic effect the listener feels is suggestive of “If You Leave,” although the band’s first album had more of an acoustic focus.
After a few songs, they all start to sound similar. Although Daughter has their own recognizable sound, they lose distinction within the tracks.
The album is good but emotionally heavy. It is not for everyday listening, but appropriate to pull out occasionally with the Kleenex. Sadness can be graceful, yet catharsis is exhausting.
Tonra’s voice is soothing, suitable for rain and the right mood. “Not to Disappear” is interesting and well-crafted, but like everything there is a time and place for it.
I appreciate Daughter’s music and dedication to their craft, but I would love to see them explore different genres, dispositions, etc. They will always have a certain amount of loyal fans, but change is necessary to guarantee expanding your audience.
As an artist, you want to stay true to yourself while connecting to as many people as possible. Relevance is everything.
