Student Government launches its 2016 Higher Education Report Card website today, which details information on its legislative report card, according to a press release.
The release said the report card is used to grade legislators’ performance on higher education issues during the regular and special legislative sessions.
SG began the report card initiative in 2015 as an attempt to inform students on “fiscal and policy issues facing higher education institutes throughout Louisiana,” according to the release.
“Many times legislators claim they are an advocate for higher education while casting votes that diminish our educational value and university experience,” SG president Zack Faircloth said in the press release. “SG’s goal is to ensure access to affordable, high quality public education in Louisiana by holding our lawmakers accountable for their votes during these legislative sessions.”
With the report card, SG members assign legislators a grade based on their voting record on higher education policy, the release said.
Legislators are currently in a second special session called by Gov. John Bel Edwards to address the $600 million budget deficit. The shortfall could affect 51,320 college students across the state, according to the press release, as the Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) is only partially funded.
The website can be found here. The official report card will be released after the special session is adjourned
