LSUPD arrested music freshman Roland Huie Tuesday morning after he allegedly smashed windows of more than 30 cars parked in the West Campus Apartments and Kirby-Smith lots.
Police booked Huie, of 407 Jackson Hall, in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for felony counts of simple criminal damage to property, driving while intoxicated and reckless operation of a vehicle.
LSUPD Maj. Ricky Adams said witnesses saw Huie smashing car windows with a wooden baseball bat around 4 a.m. and called police.
Adams said when officers approached the scene, Huie jumped in a minivan and sped off. Soon after, officers stopped Huie’s vehicle — which his residence hall neighbors said belongs to his mother — and gave Huie a field sobriety test. Huie failed the test.
Adams said an alcohol breathalyzer test showed the 19-year-old student had a blood alcohol level of .134, compared to the legal limit of .02 for minors.
Adams said LSUPD does not yet know Huie’s motive, but he said police do not believe Huie was targeting any specific group of people or particular type of car.
Huie’s neighbors in Jackson Hall said they are surprised at the extent of damage Huie caused, but they are not surprised that he acted out after drinking.
Ricardo Jeffries, a mass communication junior who lives one floor below Huie, said Huie has been known to vandalize picnic tables and garbage cans around the residence hall after drinking, but he said he never thought Huie would go on a rampage like this.
“He’s one of those guys that when they’re sober, they’re reasonable people, but all it takes is a dose of a mind altering substance for him to go off,” Jeffries said.
In the WCA parking lot, shattered glass lined several rows of cars as car owners surveyed and swept up the damage.
Brandon Kirk, an ISDS sophomore, said his roommate saw Huie break the rear window of Kirk’s car.
Kirk said Huie also crashed into his rear bumper with his mini-van, breaking Kirk’s taillight.
As of yesterday, authorities had not set Huie’s bond.
