A dropped cigarette caused a small electrical fire Friday morning near Middleton Library and Allen Hall that shut down part of the campus computer system, leaving the west side of campus without Internet for most of the day.
LSUPD Maj. Ricky Adams said the Baton Rouge Fire Department, Facility Services and his department responded to the fire after a student noticed the fire in a steam tunnel in the Quad.
The student called LSUPD from an emergency phone box.
Adams said workers extinguished the fire immediately.
Bill Beyer, interim executive director for the Office of Computing Services, said no one reported any power outages, but damage to a fiber cable shut down Internet connectivity.
Beyer said Facility Services employees worked on the problem through the weekend, and he expects the Internet to be available again today.
