University officials announced Sunday that classes will be cancelled Monday and Tuesday because of the predicted aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Student Government Vice President Patrick Downs said as of Sunday evening classes are planned to resume Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Residence halls and the Highland and Pentagon dining halls will remain open Monday and Tuesday. The Union and Student Recreation Center will be closed Monday and are planned to reopen Tuesday. Downs said some doctors will be on hand at the Student Health Center for urgent care only. Students are encouraged to call 911 in an emergency. Downs also said if students need to evacuate an off-campus residence, they should go to shelters at Woodlawn High School, Tara High School and Southeast Middle School. The Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on campus is being used as a Red Cross special needs shelter for the elderly and ill. University officials are still asking students to “stay put” wherever they are. Downs said 2700 students – 1700 in residence halls and 1000 in Greek houses – are estimated to be on campus as of Saturday night. The date to drop a course without receiving a “W” has been pushed back to the day classes resume, Downs said. Baton Rouge officials are urging people not to travel after 7 p.m. Sunday night, The Advocate reported.
