The No. 11 LSU softball team braved the cold weather and took out Nicholls State, 2-0, Wednesday night at Lady Colonel Field in Thibodaux.
LSU (30-11, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) swept the season series after defeating the Lady Colonels, 5-3, earlier in the year at home.
“It was nice to come out here and get a win despite the cold temperatures and bad weather,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “You only have so many chances to get games in, and you have to take advantage when you get to play.”
LSU’s Kristin Schmidt threw a complete-game shutout for the Tigers. Schmidt (18-9) scattered two hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters.
“I thought Kristin went out and threw a great game,” Girouard said. “She was in control of her pitches, and our defense made the plays when we needed them to.”
Leigh Ann Danos went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers at the plate. LaDonia Hughes scored both runs, going 1-for-2 on the night. Tessa Lynam also notched a pair of hits with a 2-for-4 night.
The Tigers jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After stealing second, Hughes scored on a one-out single to right field by Danos.
LSU left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. With one out Alicia Owen singled up the middle.
Megann Steege then singled to right field and Sara Fitzgerald singled to left. Hughes popped out to the pitcher to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, LSU expanded its lead to 2-0. Hughes led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third after she stole second base and Lynam singled. Danos then knocked in Hughes on a RBI single.
Nicole Wagner (4-10) took the loss for Nicholls (18-19). She allowed two runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
