The LSU men’s golf team took last place in the 2003 SEC Championship at the Seaside Golf Course in Sea Island, Ga.
The Florida Gators took home the SEC title shooting 16 over par. Auburn and Georgia followed with 22 and 26 over par respectively. The Tigers finished the weekend 77 over par.
Hazardous weather conditions delayed the start of the first round by three hours. Team leader, senior John Humphries, ended the first round tied for 8th overall shooting a one over par 71. Sophomore Heath West contributed a 9 over par first-round performance. The Tigers finished the day in last place with a 35 over par 315 score.
Sophomore Tucker Ervin led the Tigers in round two Saturday. Ervin shot two over par, tieing for 36th place at the end of round two of his first SEC championship. Humphries continued his strong play, shooting five over par along with West. Despite improving their play in round two shooting 29 over par, LSU remained in 12th place.
Ervin and Humphries shot their best round of the weekend Sunday, both shooting one under par 69 while West added a one over par performance. But it was not enough to pull the Tigers out of last place. They finished the day 13 over par, putting them 77 over par for the tournament. The closest opponent was Mississippi State shooting 74 over par.
Humphries finished the tournament tied for fifth place shooting four over par for the weekend. Ervin totaled 11 strokes over par, putting him in a tie for 24th place while West ended 15 strokes beyond par in a tie for 36th.
The last place finish could put a damper on the Tigers’ chance for a NCAA regional. LSU coach Greg Jones was hoping for a strong performance at the SEC championships to boost the Tigers’ shot at regionals.
