During the past two weeks, LSUPD arrested several individuals and assisted local law enforcement.
Police arrested an individual April 9 for aggravated battery.
At 7:11 a.m. LSUPD received a call that someone was breaking a window to an entrance/exit door at East Laville Hall.
Officers arrived and noticed a line of blood droplets leading to Room 127, Rabalais said.
Because officers feared for the person’s safety, they entered the room where they observed one female and two males.
Billy Chambers III, 20, of 9523 Swingalong Drive, Baton Rouge, was lying on the bed and had lacerations and scrapes on his forearm.
Police also found a male victim holding a towel to his forehead with blood on his hands. After speaking with him, police discovered Chambers had attacked him with a pair of scissors.
While waiting for EMS to arrive at the scene, Chambers jumped from the bed and aggressively moved toward the police officers, Rabalais said. Police pushed him back onto the bed and proceeded to struggle with him.
During the struggle, Chambers kicked one officer in the abdomen and attempted to slap the other officer in the face, Rabalais said.
Rabalais also said police restrained the individual with handcuffs until EMS arrived, and the two males were transported to Earl K. Long.
Police booked Chambers into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for criminal damage to property, aggravated battery and battery of a police officer.
Police still are investigating this matter because the individual’s pupils were dilated, indicating the individual could have been under the influence of narcotics, Rabalais said.
During Spring Break, police were patrolling South Stadium Drive when they noticed a vehicle without a license plate. They stopped the driver and checked their computer system for information and any outstanding warrants, said LSUPD Lt. Lawrence Rabalais.
The computer said the suspect, Gerome Turner, 51, of 724 Tyler St. Baton Rouge, had an outstanding warrant from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office for the distribution of cocaine. Turner also did not appear at his April 22, 2002, court date.
LSUPD booked the suspect into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison April 15 as a fugitive from EBRSO. EBRSO then charged him with the distribution of cocaine.
In a separate incident April 11, police arrested an individual involved in a hit-and-run accident with a parking officer.
Matthew Gates, 18, of 8221 Leonardos Drive, Shreveport, La., allegedly struck the rear of a parking truck and then fled the scene, Rabalais said.
Police located the suspect’s vehicle by a description from the traffic control officer involved in the incident, Rabalais said.
After the suspect admitted to the crash and leaving the scene, he was issued a misdemeanor summons for hit-and-run driving.
There was minor damage to both vehicles, Rabalais said. The individual said he fled instead of calling the police because he was frightened.
Before the spring football game April 11, two individuals got into a fight over a parking spot, police said.
While the victim was leaving his vehicle and walking toward the stadium, the suspect yelled profanities and told him he would key his car, Rabalais said.
Upon returning to his car, the victim noticed a dent on his trunk and a note on his windshield from a witness who saw the suspect kick the vehicle. The witness also left the suspect’s license plate number, Rabalais said.
Police contacted Walter Williamson, 60, and he admitted to kicking the car, and he was issued a misdemeanor summons.
In an unrelated incident, police arrested an individual April 11 for driving while intoxicated.
Police received a call at 1:15 a.m. from residents in the Evangline horseshoe area stating a person had struck a tree with a vehicle.
The caller also said the individual appeared to be intoxicated and was attempting to leave the scene, police said.
When police arrived, they observed Mark Preston, 20, of 20 Antique Drive, Lafayette, La., standing near his vehicle, which had sustained moderate to severe damage from the tree.
The individual showed obvious signs of intoxication and was given a field sobriety test, which he failed, Rabalais said.
He also had an injury on his forehead and was transported to Earl K. Long hospital for treatment, police said.
He refused to submit to a chemical blood test to determine his blood alcohol level, and therefore was issued a misdemeanor summons for DWI, no driver’s license, an expired license plate and careless operation of vehicle, Rabalais said.
He was released into the care of the doctors at the hospital because the hospital would not release him.
