As Valentine’s Day approaches, plots and plans abound for a perfect night with a special someone. The single women of Baton Rouge have to stick together to make it through the most dreaded day of the year.
For single women looking to avoid red roses and hearts full of chocolate, a simple solution presents itself — ladies’ night on the town.
Put on those dancing shoes or bust out that red lipstick; The Varsity teamed up with Budweiser and X104.9 to put on a “Cupid’s Ball” for women to strut their stuff. The “Cupid’s Ball” is a dressed-up RetroActive. The Varsity will be playing retro music all night for women to kick up their heels.
Go with the girls or pick up a guy escort, but don’t miss this chance to win the “special prize package” consisting of a weekend for two in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. All expenses are paid for the winner and a guest, including hotel accommodations, passes for the Budweiser balcony and $200 spending cash.
There also will be a Ms. Valentine contest, in which the winner will receive free merchandise from X104.9 and Budweiser and, of course, the Ms. Valentine title. Every Varsity patron will receive five stickers to place on the woman they feel is the most attractive in the bar. The woman with the most stickers will be crowned Ms. Valentine.
If dancing isn’t the mood of the night, and something more appeasing to the ears sounds right, Oteil and the Peacemakers will be rocking out at Chelsea’s beginning at 10:30 p.m. with $10 tickets.
If Baton Rouge seems too bland this V-Day, head to New Orleans. The House of Blues will be hosting Bob Schneider and his solo acoustic performance.
“Not only does he look good, but his voice is to die for,” said Jessica Carey, a dairy science sophomore.
So grab the girls and go drool over Schneider’s amazing voice and dreamy face. It costs $12 and starts at 9 p.m., but is only open to those 18 years of age and older.
Want something a little more anger-driven? The Shim Sham is the perfect place to escape the love-sick, Hallmark card-giving world. CKY will be performing with Momento and Overtone. The all-ages rock show starts at 7 p.m. and costs $12 at the door.
If sentimental entertainment is in line, there is always the “Lonely Hearts Club Band” performing at Tipitina’s Uptown with its Valentine’s Day Beatles Tribute. Special guests include Anders Osborne, Tommy Malone, Jeffery Clemens, Chris Chew, Brian Coogan, Johnny Sketch and The Dirty Notes. The Beatles mania begins at 10:30 p.m. and costs $15.
If music doesn’t soothe the soul, there is always looking up and wishing upon a star for something to calm those single-angst driven nerves, literally. The Baton Rouge Astronomical Society is hosting public stargazing this Valentine’s Day evening.
If tired of the love in the air from Venus — the planet of love — then join Pamela Rogers in a discussion of the Red Planet, Mars, starting at 7 p.m. From 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be stargazing through the telescope, weather permitting. This all takes place at the Highland Road Observatory.
“There’s no reason for anyone single to stay in,” said Debbie Meiners, a mass communication sophomore. “It’s the night the singles should go out and celebrate not being attached to someone. Everyone should go out and live the good college life.”
