*Legend has it that if someone stepped on “George,” a colored stone in front of the Law Center, they would flunk their next exam. Several stones now are painted, and those who still believe either stumble trying to determine which one is the “real George” or they avoid all of them.
* William Tecumseh Sherman, a famous soldier of the Civil War, was the first
president of the University in 1859-1860. Back then it was known as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy and had five members on its faculty.
* LSU did not allow female students to attend the University until 1906 — 46 years after it originally had opened.
* LSU has a rich military heritage. In fact, ROTC was mandatory at LSU for all entering freshmen until 1969 — more than 100 years after it first opened its doors. This heritage has earned the University the nickname “Ole War Skule.”
* Freshmen used to have it hard here at LSU. From shaving their heads to wearing beanie caps, everyone knew when a freshman entered the room. One of the most popular freshmen events was the Pajama Game. For the first pep rally and the first football game of the season, male freshmen had to attend in their pajamas.
* The Huey P. Long Fieldhouse was the original student Union. The swimming pool located inside was, at its construction, the largest in the country.
