The College Republican Alliance geared up for the upcoming presidential election with its “Geaux Bush” tailgate party at Friday night’s baseball game.
The campaign is meant to create an interest in the 2004 presidential campaign on campus and encourage students to vote for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.
Members tailgated near Alex Box Stadium, handed out purple and gold “Bush/Cheney 04” bumper stickers and spread the word about the Republican organization’s new campaign on campus.
“We’re adding Louisiana flavor to the Bush campaign,” said Chris Boudreaux, president of CRA.
Boudreaux said the bumper stickers are part of a “grassroots campaign” to increase awareness and enthusiasm in the LSU community for the presidential election.
“The purple and gold bumper sticker ties in with school pride, and people are more apt to put something that relates to LSU on their cars,” Boudreaux said.
The tailgate party was just the beginning, and the election is still months away.
CRA members will discuss the game plan for the future of the Geaux Bush campaign at Wednesday night’s meeting.
Boudreaux said that after the spring semester ends, CRA officers will evaluate accomplishments and goals of the past semester and get ready for the campaign in the fall. The bumper stickers and T-shirts that promote Bush and Cheney are the main focus of the CRA campaign, Boudreaux said.
About a month before elections, CRA plans to host a rally with “big name” speakers.
Boudreaux also said CRA is planning to host rallies and tailgate parties during football games to “get the word out.” People can register to vote, buy T-shirts and volunteer to help with the campaign.
“A lot of new freshmen will be here in the fall, and we hope to galvanize new members of the LSU community to conservative issues and get them excited about the upcoming election,” said Devin Reid, CRA vice president.
