Last Friday, the Union Programming council threw this semester’s last “Late Night LSU,” which featured MADtv comedian Bobby Lee.
As the first Asian-American on MADtv, Lee is known for his unique impressions of Connie Chung and Jackie Chan, among several other Asian celebrities. Before his one-hour stand- up act for LSU students, Lee naturally showed his true eccentric self in an interview with Revelry.
What is your impression of Baton Rouge, so far?
Well, I just came from New Mexico, which is the asshole of the world. If you haven’t been there, it’s just like Mexico, except it has a Wal-Mart. So, right now, Baton Rouge looks like heaven.
What music are you listening to right now?
I like smaller bands that are under the radar, but about to blow up, like Franz Ferdinand, which is a Scottish band. I like The Darkness. My favorite is the older stuff: Velvet Underground, the old Talking Heads stuff, and David Bowie.
How would you compare MADtv to Saturday Night Live?
Well, there are obvious things: SNL is a live show, and we’re not, so we can do three or four takes, when they can only do it once. They are an institution; we’re more like the underdog. To be a part of an institution, you’re always being compared to other people. I’d rather be a part of the underdog. I don’t need big deals and hype. I just want to work and do comedy.
What is your favorite food?
Chicken chimichangas; they are so good. There’s this place in L.A. called “El Cholo,” where you have to wait an hour and a half to eat. Their chicken chimichangas are the f**king bomb.
Who would you’ve like to see win on “The Apprentice?”
What is that? I don’t even know what that is. I don’t own a TV. I’ve never even seen an episode of MADtv. I have seen takes of myself, but I’ve never turned it on during a Saturday night. I’d rather not watch myself or my buddies on TV.
How do you eat a Reese’s?
I just jam all two of them in my mouth at the same time. Actually, I’ve never had one. If it didn’t have peanut butter in it, I would eat it. Peanut butter gives me diarrhea, but so do a lot of things. I have a sensitive stomach.
Are you working on any new impressions?
I don’t really ever work on impressions. Since I am Asian, anyone famous who is Asian, I am going to play them, as a role. I’ve never been able to do good impressions, I just do ones that people won’t know if I’m doing it well or not. Like Connie Chung, people see that impression and say, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s so good,’ when really, I mean, I look like her, and I’m using my own voice.
What was the last movie you watched?
I watch so many movies. Literally, I watch about 20 every week. I just watched “Hell Boy” and “Dawn of the Dead.” Of course, I saw “The Passion of the Christ.”
If you were on the cover of a tabloid, what would the news story be?
“Bobby Lee Humps the Olsen Twins Before They’re 18,” or maybe it would say, “Bobby Lee is Really Margaret Cho.” Actually, I don’t know what it might say.
