The University has named Frank Cartledge as the new vice-provost for academic affairs.
Cartledge has served as an associate dean in the College of Basic Sciences for the past three years. During that time, he oversaw the student services division of the college and the Masters of Natural Sciences program.
Kevin Carman, interim dean for the College of Basic Sciences, said Cartledge has been successful in attracting funding for various educational activities.
Carman said Cartledge also took time to meet individually and work with students in trying to solve problems.
Cartledge is replacing Pauline Rankin, who left the vice-provost position in October 2003 to become the dean for the Division of Continuing Education.
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Risa Palm initiated the search for a new vice-provost for academic affairs in early December 2003, with Cartledge serving as the chairman of the search committee.
Cartledge said while the University is now facing several challenges, including integrating technology into instruction and research, and implementing curricular and course changes, he is looking forward to working with the various departments on campus.
“I want to work with deans, department chairs, faculty, staff and students to assure that there is continuing progress in developing an environment promoting innovation and discovery while maintaining the highest standards of excellence,” Cartledge said.
Palm said Cartledge’s experience as a successful administrator was one of the factors that made him the “perfect person in this role.”
Cartledge’s appointment comes shortly after Harold Silverman, former dean of the College of Basic Sciences, was named to the newly-created position of vice-provost for arts, sciences and engineering in January.
Palm said Cartledge has experience in areas that he will have to work with in his new position, including undergraduate education, working with area schools and working with information technology.
Palm said Cartledge will be handling issues such as student appeals, admissions and other issues relating to students.
“I am very confident that Frank Cartledge will be a wonderful vice-provost,” Palm said.
