Ringing was not the only sound heard from the Memorial TowerMonday afternoon when alumnae and current members of Alpha KappaAlpha Sorority, Inc. entertained a crowd of about 50 people with achoreographed song and dance routine.
“The point of bringing old members back is to show thelegacy of the chapter,” said April Langdon-Shepherd, a masscommunication junior and Alpha Kappa Alpha vice president.
The girls, dressed in black shirts, jeans, a pink belt andpearls, introduced themselves to the crowd with different rhymesfor each pledge class.
Langdon-Shepherd said the first ever step show is only one partof a week’s worth of events sponsored by the sorority.
Langdon-Shepherd said a picnic honoring the graduate chapterkicked off the week, and the events will end Saturday with sororitymembers participating in a community service event.
Heather Williams, a biological sciences junior and currentmember of Alpha Kappa Alpha, said girls who become involved withthe sorority usually become involved for life.
“That’s the difference between us and othersororities,” Williams said.
For Shannon Harris, an elementary education junior and currentmember of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the step show was a great experiencebecause it gave current members a chance to meet older members.
“It was nice because we got a chance to learn more aboutour sorority and their past experiences,” Harris said.
Kristen Fontenot, an Alpha Kappa Alpha alumna, said she wasdelighted she had a chance to participate in the step show becauseit gave her a chance to share her knowledge with current members ofthe sorority and re-live her undergraduate experience.
Kashunda Williams, an Alpha Kappa Alpha alumna, also enjoyedcoming back to campus to participate in the show.
“I feel it is very important for us to come back andcontinue to be part of the chapter,” Williams said. “Iam very proud of the girls and I’m impressed with where theyare today.”
