The upsets will happen this week. Mark it down. Teams thatappear to be climbing up the polls are going to be seriouslysurprised. Enough talk though, let’s get to the shockers
Last week: 3-2 straight up, 3-2 vs. spread . Season: 37-13straight up, 16-24 vs. spread.
No. 3 Miami (-7.5) at N.C. State, 6:45 p.m., ESPN — BrockBerlin finds the true meaning of interception when the N.C. Statedefensive line pounds into him and his passes fall into the handsof the Wolfpack’s secondary. Running back T.A. McLendon willneed a big game to take the heat off quarterback Jay Davis and thepassing game. Miami’s offense has been questionable all year, with the exception of the second half against Louisville, and thisdefense will be the one to stop it. Just don’t kick the ballto Devin Hester.
Prediction: N.C. State 26, Miami 24
No. 11 Michigan (+4.5) at No. 12 Purdue, 2:30 p.m., ABC —Kyle Orton and the Boilermakers are down after blowing a 17-pointlead to Wisconsin last week; a hangover will spill into this week. The Wolverines have been flying under the radar since an earlyseason loss to Notre Dame. As a senior, Orton should bounce backafter a costly fumble in the UW loss, but this will be the comingout party for the Michigan defense. Mike Hart and quarterback ChadHenne will put up enough numbers to keep Purdue at bay.
Michigan 24, Purdue 17
No. 9 Texas (-1.5) at No. 24 Texas Tech, 6 p.m., TBS —Break out the PS2 because the Red Raiders are going to put up someridiculous numbers in this game. Quarterback Sonny Cumbie is likethe prospect you create on NCAA 2005 with 99 throwing power. He’s just going to throw it, throw it and throw it some more.Texas’ defense is pretty solid, and the secondary will beable to hang with the TTU receivers . . . for about a half. Add tothe mix that UT quarterback Vince Young may play hurt and all thepressure will be on tailback Cedric Benson to have a career game, and you get a classic upset.
Texas Tech 45, Texas 37
Alabama (+7) at No. 13 Tennessee, 2:30 p.m. CBS — Onemight expect the Volunteers to roll in this game, except for thefact that Tide fans are chomping at the bit to get back at UT coachPhillip Fulmer for his testimony against the school. Without BrodieCroyle or any semblance of an offense, the Vols’ defense willkeep the score low. If Erik Ainge and the Tennessee offense showup, they may pull away, but after seeing them struggle against OleMiss last week, ‘Bama may be in this one until the finalminutes.
Tennessee 21, Alabama 17
No. 6 Georgia (-8) at Arkansas, 6 p.m., ESPN2 — Arkansasis the most unpredictable and dangerous team in the country.Unfortunately, they do just as much damage to themselves as otherteams. The Bulldogs will build an early lead, but the home crowdwill keep the Razorbacks in it. If Matt Jones is healthy, look forthe Hogs to scare UGA like they did Florida, but once again, thecomeback will fall short.
Georgia 27, Arkansas 23
