Pouring shots and going out is a big part of the college scene. It’s all fun and games until someone needs help. Safety, of course, is of the utmost importance when enjoying a fun night out, but sometimes, it is hard to ensure you have resources available if issues arise.
This is where the angel shot comes in. This “shot” is not a real shot. It is a code phrase you can use to alert bartenders if you need help without drawing attention to yourself.
The different flavors of angel shots tell the bartenders the assistance you need.
“Just asking for an angel shot is the easiest way for others to not notice what is going on, but as bartenders, we will know what you are talking about,” said Kaiden Keller, a bartender at The Revelry.
But how is this getting started? LSU’s student government is striving to implement this new idea in bars around LSU’s campus.
Student government is known for their campus events, but this year they are also focusing on student safety on and off campus. Joseph Liberto, Student Body president, is working with the Chief of Police, Marshall Walters, to include this initiative in bartender training in bars around LSU’s campus.
“Angel shots are a program we have started here. We have seen it happen at other universities like South Carolina and Oklahoma. It’s really a safety measure. We have seen LSU do a great job of becoming a lot safer on campus. There is a lot more lighting and a lot more police. We know students are going to go out and have a good time, and when they are having a good time, we want them to be safe,” Liberto said.
With these student government plans, you can feel safer and stay safe at the bar. But what about getting home?
Getting home from the bar can be a challenge, especially for college students on a budget. Liberto and LSU Student government are also working on a solution to make Ubers more affordable to students with the help of Michael Antoine, Associate Vice President for Campus Safety, Emergency Preparedness & Emergency Response.
“We started Uber rides last semester, and students can get 10 dollars off their Uber once a week so they can get a safe ride home wherever they are. Safety is a huge thing for us as you can see these are very safety-minded,” Liberto said.
They are working to continue the Uber discounts in the coming weeks and to get the Angel shots on the menu by the end of the semester. As we look forward to these new additions by student government, stay safe as you party through Tigerland, and always remember there is more help around you than you think.
