LSU Women’s Basketball will keep on dancing all the way to Spokane, Washington after the 101 – 71 win against Florida State.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey met with the media after Monday night’s win to discuss the full performance from her team, a standout performance from Sa’Myah Smith and what the message was to send the Tigers on a 31-6 run in the third quarter.
Sa’Myah Smith was 9-9 Monday bringing in 20 points for the team. Mulkey said this game not only boosted Smith’s confidence but showed the work she’s put in over the last year.
“She deserves that,” Mulkey said. “She has worked extremely hard and been challenged extremely hard. And that double-double is great but if you look at the stat sheet she also had six assists and only one turnover. They [Smith and Anessah Morrow] need to be rewarded because they had two great games.”
Mulkey said, Anessah Morrow also put up some stats in Monday’s 30-point win over the Seminoles. She also had a double-double in her final game in the PMAC, she had 11 rebounds and 26 points.
Guard Flau’jae Johnson said that people need to stop looking at the big three and look at everybody after Saturday’s win against SDSU. This win over Florida State was a true testament to what can happen when the team all comes together to get the W.
“I think Flau’jae put it best,” Mulkey said. “We talk about the Big three, but what else can you write about them? Talk about the other five, the other six. Our bench was special. Our entire team was special. It was electric in there [the PMAC] for two days.”
The team is focusing on each win individually, trying not to look too far down the road and prepare for the next round. This isn’t one they are taking for granted.
“You don’t take Sweet 16’s for granted,” Mulkey said. “There are many people who never make it to one. There are five players in our locker room that have never been to one. I explained this is why you come here. But our goal every year is just to make a run and see if you can make it to the Final Four.”
They will take on NC State, a team Mulkey says is much better than the first time they played each other, on Friday at 6:30 CT.
