Omaha. For some teams it’s a dream, but for LSU it’s become a birthright. The Tigers clinched their 20th college world series appearance Sunday scoring 28 runs over two games to punch yet another ticket to the promised land.
“Alex Box was packed. It was awesome,” Junior First Baseman Jared Jones said. “There’s nothing more I could say than I’m just super grateful and what a wonderful day it’s been.”
The Tigers slugged their way to a Super Regional title, and on a scorching hot weekend in Alex Box, Steven Milam would turn out to be the hottest thing going, with a bases-clearing double Sunday to break the game open for LSU.
“I just love the big moments,” Milam said. “It’s what I came here for, and that’s why you come to LSU.”
The LSU offense has become the story this postseason, with the bats clicking on all cylinders just at the right time, scoring at will in a multitude of ways.
“We just went out there and we wanted to get pitches in the middle of the plate and do damage on him and take everything else,” Jones said of the Tigers’ gameplan.
“That was our plan going into it was get the ball at the plate in the thigh and don’t miss it. And when he lets us walk down to first base you take it. That was the plan tonight and we did a good job executing it.”
Led by starter Anthony Eyanson, the Tiger pitching continued to hold down a strong West Virginia lineup, allowing the celebrations to ensue.
“Very tough lineup, obviously. Just had to mentally lock in a little bit more than normal. Just focus on executing a pitch. Slowing down in the moment,” Eyanson said of his start. “Couple times I felt like I was moving a little too fast. Just wanted to slow it down, really take a deep breath and just be myself.”
Sunday’s win marks LSU’s 10th super regional title and their second under Head Coach Jay Johnson, this one meaning just a little more to the LSU Skipper.
This is the best place in the world,” Johnson said of Omaha. “It’s the only place in the world for me. I really wanted these guys to go because they earned it.”
“Whether we won two games this weekend or not they earned a trip to the College World Series. And I can’t wait to go chase a national championship with them,” Johnson said of his team.
Johnson would go on to talk about his commitment to the team, saying “I know where I’m at and I know what I’m entrusted with. I give it my entire life. And I give it to these guys and they give it back to me.”
LSU now gears up for a Saturday night showdown with a familiar foe, the Arkansas Razorbacks, to open the 2025 College World Series.
