Social Media has the ability to make local traditions, a tourist must-see. That is exactly what happened at Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina, located a short walk from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.
“Just a fun competition with the teams that are here, but it’s actually for a good cause,’ LSU fan Larry White said, ‘the food bank is the real winner.”
Third generation bar owner Kevin Culjat opened Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina in 2018. Culjat owns 14 bars, and when he took over Rocco’s he tweaked a long-standing tradition of selling team color shots that would take over social media.
“Well that’s nice, but it’s hard to do,’ Culjat said, ‘Jello is easy, and it’s already colored.”
So, his staff whipped up some jello shots that color coordinated with the competing teams and watched the customers go crazy. Culjat added to the fire and announced whoever bought the most jello shots would get a plaque on the wall.
The challenge spread like wildfire, which means it didn’t take long for the social media trolls to have something negative to say. Rocco’s did not want the money-hungry stereotype, which sparked them to donate $1.50 to the competing school’s local food banks and 50 cents to Omaha non-profits.
“LSU shows up, drinks 68,000 shots; I write a check for $147,000 and here we are,” Culjat said.
Before the 2023 College World Series, Rocco made an official “X” account for the jello shot tally, @CWSShotBoard. Now, the account has 57.9K followers.
Nobody takes this challenge as seriously as the LSU Faithful, one fan took it upon himself to order over 125 shots a few hours before first pitch of the LSU vs. UCLA game.
“Every tiger has their part to play, and this is my part,” Jackson Greenwald said.
LSU still holds the highest jello shot record at 68,888 shots, and is on pace to set a new record this 2025 College World Series.
