LSU baseball head coach Jay Johnson’s new $23 million contract makes him the highest-paid coach in college baseball. This raise shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
It shows LSU’s appreciation for Johnson and determination to build on their success for another seven years.
Johnson’s contract gives him an annual $600,000 raise and extends his time with the Tigers until 2032.
With this new deal in place, the only real question is how much more success will LSU see over Johnson’s extended tenure?
Right now, LSU is undeniably one of the hottest teams in college baseball. Jay Johnson led the Tigers to two College World Series wins in three years, while also maintaining great success in the regular season, holding a record of 190-75.
Johnson already looks to be setting up for future success, with him bringing in one of the top-ranked recruiting classes of 2026 and a strong group of transfers. He’ll have the opportunity to continue working his magic and produce top talents with the extra years in charge.
The group added by Johnson over the offseason includes five of the top 100 college freshmen and six of the top 100 college transfers. The class included two studs out of Texas: right-handed pitcher Marco Paz and the state’s top catcher, Omar Serna Jr.
Because of the new contract, Johnson will be able to work with these new faces over the coming years, and with Johnson’s exceptional skills for developing players, any of these new guys could be next in line of LSU stars like Paul Skenes and Kade Anderson.
Signing Johnson to a new deal also may have come at the best time possible.
SEC schools have been no strangers to the College World Series, with teams like Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama making big pushes in recruiting to compete with the Tigers. Keeping such a recognizable and respected coach in charge will be huge in recruitment battles to keep LSU’s roster strong year after year.
Johnson’s success has also grown LSU baseball’s culture in the past few years. While many schools don’t see baseball on a level similar to football or basketball, LSU takes immense pride in the sport and is frequently able to sell out Alex Box for big games. This does great for the school’s revenue but also its sports culture, as students can get involved in top sporting events all through the spring.
Johnson is solidifying himself as one of the best coaches in college baseball, and with the investments made for the future, there seems to be no slowing down. There’s a lot for LSU baseball fans to get excited about, as they eagerly wait to see the success Jay Johnson can bring over this new extension.
