In the U.S., more than 10 million adults experience domestic violence every year, regardless of whether it is physical, emotional, or psychological abuse, which is why October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, when people come together and advocate for a way to end domestic violence.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and it’s important to know what to do if you or someone else is in a harmful situation.
LSU’s Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Response and Resolution, Asha Murphy, shares ways to help someone experiencing domestic violence.
“Offer them nonjudgmental support, make sure you are [their] listening ear, and that you are not overly directing them too much because survivors who are in the situation may not know [how] to get out the relationship,” Murphy said.
LSU’s Division of Engagement, Civil Rights, and Title IX will be hosting an event for domestic violence awareness month on October 22nd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the Student Union to raise awareness and connect students with campus and community resources.
If you or someone you know is struggling with domestic violence, please reach out to someone and get the help needed. For students, LSU’s 24-hour crisis support can be reached at (225) 924-5781. For anyone struggling, dial the National Hotline at (800) 799-7233 for 24-hour support.
