White House and the Democrats have reached a deal to avoid a partial government shutdown.
Lawmakers agreed to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security as they negotiate new restriction tied to President Donald Trump’s expansion of immigration enforcement.
This deal comes less than a month after the deaths of two protestors killed by federal agents in Minneapolis.
The first victim, Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. Citizen and Minneapolis resident was shot and killed by federal immigration agents on Jan 7. Good’s death was ruled a homicide.
The second victim, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive-care nurse and U.S. Citizen, was shot and killed on Jan. 24 by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis during protest over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Pretti’s death is still being investigated.
Pretti was reportedly filming agents at the time of his death, which posed questions as to if he was an immediate threat when officers opened fire.
Both deaths have led to protests and scrutiny of ICE tactics.
Negotiators have agreed to seperate the DHS funding from the legislation for two weeks. While simultaneously debating Democratic demands for restraining U.S. Immigration and Cuustoms Enforcement Agency.
President Trump said in a social media post that “Republicans and Democrats have come together to get the vast majority of the government of the government funded until September”, while encouraging members of both parties to cast a “much needed Bipartisan ‘YES’ vote.”
