LSU fell to the McNeese State Cowboys Tuesday night by a score of 7-6.
LSU jumped out to an early lead thanks to Zach Yorke’s two run home run to right field in the bottom of the first.
This lead was short-lived for the Tigers as McNeese hung up four runs in the top of the second as LSU handcuffed themselves by walking two batters along with hitting two.
The Cowboys would continue to capitalize on these Tiger mistakes as they eventually grew their lead to 7-2 on a small number of base hits. One of the few base hits came in the form of a jam-shot RBI single that was dunked into right field by catcher Seth Fontenot.
LSU would not go out easily, however, as they were able to score in three of the final five frames. One of these runs came via a solo shot to left field by sophomore John Pearson in the bottom of the eighth.
Then, in the bottom of the ninth, LSU managed to get two runners on base with two outs (Steven Milam singled to left field and Zach Yorke walked) for Seth Dardar. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Dardar hit a warning track flyball that landed in the glove of left fielder Bryce Fontenot.
It was ultimately too little too late for LSU as McNeese jumped out to a big lead that LSU could never mount. The Cowboys did not beat themselves as they played a clean and clever ball game leaving the error column blank and being disciplined at the plate.
LSU (8-1) will look to avoid losing two in a row Friday against Dartmouth, while McNeese (3-5) hopes to keep the momentum rolling as they travel to Nicholls to open up conference play on Friday as well.
