Cooper Moore opened the fifth inning with a ball spiked in the dirt. It was the last pitch he threw in the game before exiting with trainer Isaac Trujillo.
He is set to miss 2-3 weeks with a tricep injury, per head coach Jay Johnson.
“His tricep was sore,” Johnson said. “That’s it, that’s all I know… That first [pitch] missed so badly … I didn’t feel good about it.”
Moore’s face looked sour as he headed to the dugout, like something that could possibly be more serious. Johnson said the mound meeting was routine and normal.
“I’m optimistic that he’ll be alright,” Johnson said.
Moore only threw 62 pitches in what was lining up to be another solid outing. In his four complete innings, he allowed four hits and two runs, striking out four and throwing one wild pitch.
“First two innings were great,” Johnson said. “He’s done his job keeping us in games … Tonight is unfortunate because I thought he was throwing the ball good.”
Johnson came out after that 62nd pitch and met with Moore while Trujillo walked up to the mound. After talking to the home plate umpire, Johnson got on his walkie-talkie to conversate with the dugout. After a few minutes, Cooper Williams emerged.
It’s tied for Moore’s shortest outing of the year, but he could have gone at least another two innings without being removed early. His previous low for pitches was 76.
Moore, like the other two starters for LSU, has been elite. His ERA now sits at 3.38. Over his 32 total innings of work, he has allowed only 30 hits while striking out 39.
