LSU Baseball Head Coach spoke to the media Saturday afternoon after the Tigers fell short 4-3 against the Oklahoma Sooners in the series finale.
The Tigers had the lead in the first inning with a lead of 2-1. With pitching for the first four innings, the Sooners had close to no success, ending the first inning only allowing one run and one hit.
As the game went on, the Tigers were struggling on the offensive side, not gaining any runs or hits within the second, third and fourth innings. Eventually, Johnson switched Schmidt out for Guidry in the fifth inning to pitch. He explains his reason as to why he kept Guidry through to the top of the eighth inning.
“The breaking ball was giving them problems…the shadows at that time of the day with the breaking ball starting high and going low, I did not think they were picking it up very well,” said Coach Johnson.
Despite coming off three losses in the series, he is still confident in his team, especially for freshman Omar Serna Jr.
“He’s the next most impactful player on the team right now, outside of Jake Brown.”
Despite the slow start in conference play, Johnson still has faith in the team. “Maybe I am trying to build confidence in this group? Yeah, I am, and are there things that this group doesn’t do as well as that group clearly.”
Coach Johnson found similarities between Oklahoma and his team in 2025.
“They can win in a number of different ways. Their bullpen is very good and their athleticism and defensive is good. They are not relying on the home run to score and you know that was a staple of our team last year. So you know we’ve got to figure out a way to get back to that, which would be the nature of, you know, moving some things around a little bit.”
The Tigers need to work on their batting, as restrictions are making it tough for them to be successful on the offensive side.
The Tigers will host Louisiana Tech at Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
