LSU’s Student Body President Lavar Henderson issued his first veto of the semester Monday to a Student Senate bill that bans funding from politically affiliated organizations to Student Government tickets.
The bill, SGB 22, was passed 49-1-4 during the Senate’s meeting on Wednesday. It was presented by Sen. Ducote, Sen. Jack Appleton, Sen. Benjamin Goldstein and Sen. James Williams III.
Henderson has told the Senate previously that he would not sign any legislation with “politically-charged” language; however, Ducote said the bill is entirely apolitical.
When asked what motivated them to write the bill, proposers said there is an organization known as Campus Victory Project, a subsidiary of Turning Point USA, according to the meeting minutes.
“Their scope of influence is hard to figure out but it’s up to you to do some research,” the minutes read.
When reached by the Reveille for comment, Henderson said he’s met with the bill’s authors and agrees there’s a “need to protect the integrity of our processes,” but the bill will need to “be revisited and be reworked.”
The goal behind the bill is to keep student elections focused on students, authors said. The bill does not limit students or recognized student organizations from interacting with the tickets.
During the meeting Wednesday, Ducote said it was unfair that political organizations were supporting candidates to “push an agenda.”
In response to the veto, Ducote said although disappointed, they are confident in the importance and legality of the bill. Ducote said they are willing to work with university administration to ensure it meets legal standards.
“Student Government should always be concerned about the needs of the student body, not outside political agendas,” Ducote told the Reveille.
There will not be a special veto session held; however, the Senate will discuss the veto during its meeting this week.
