I know the whole vampire phase has passed, but I recently discovered a new series. Not only does this series not have any broody vampires, but creates a new kind of lore to associate with vampires. The “House of Camarre” series starts off with “Blood Rights” by Kristen Painter.
The kick-ass heroine’s name is Chrysabelle. Her body is covered in gold tattoos that show her as her rank — a camarre. She is bred for purchase. Her blood is pure and she is bought to feed her vampire owner.
She has always wanted her freedom, but didn’t expect to find her master dead one day. All evidence points to her, so she does what any rational female would do. She runs. Unfortunately for her she runs right into the arms of Malkolm — an infamously dangerous vampire.
Malkolm killed one of his kind, so he is forever cursed to kill anyone he drinks from. Their names are then tattooed onto his skin. So, it’s a real problem when he meets Chrysabelle because her camarre blood calls for him, and surprise, surprise he ends up being her new owner of her blood.
There are lots of twists and turns, but these two put their differences aside, sometimes, to fight back against the people blackmailing her. Chrysabelle finds out secrets about her past she didn’t even know were secret. Malkolm is reunited with his ex-wife from hell. Not that he knew she was alive or anything.
There isn’t any hardcore romance in the first book in the series. It’s hinted at, but there’s no kissing or kinky “Fifty Shades” sex going on. The buildup of their relationship is perfect. A lot of authors take their characters to meeting to instantly being in love, but Painter takes the time to make sure the relationship is believable. Well, as believable as a vampire and camarre can be. Plus I have a soft spot for two love birds starting out hating each other, or at least completely infatuated but act annoyed with each other.
I want to be clear that this is not a romance novel. It’s action packed and awesome. Any person who likes science fiction should enjoy it like I did. So, go out and read this book.
