THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — A psychiatrist says a man accused of beheading his son is not clearly psychotic and is competent for trial.

Dr. Mark Wilson headed the team that decided last summer that Jeremiah Wright was competent for trial on a charge of murdering 7-year-old Jori Lirette.

The Daily Comet reports that the hearing continues Monday.

Wilson was the last psychiatrist prosecutors planned to call.

He testified Saturday that tests never ruled out or confirmed psychosis, but he decided Wright understood the charge against him and could help his attorneys.

Defense attorney Cecelia Bonin argued that Wright’s repeated statements that he was competent and wanted to return to jail suggest insanity. She asked whether any sane person would want to be shackled in jail when he had more freedom in a hospital.
