On Wednesday, Jan. 15, I found myself dancing like a fool to the music of one of the, in my and many others opinion, most talented bands in recent years. Their name? The Helio Sequence.
Coming out of the Portland music scene and on their fifth album, the haunting Negotiations, this band is no stranger to the touring life. The two-piece band, made up of Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel, fills a room with rhythmically charged sounds and gorgeous melodies and guitar lines. Though they have been playing music together since 1996 and I believe they have just begun to enter their stride with their last two albums. The crowd harmoniously agreed with my sentiments as they sang along to almost every word.
They took to the stage around 9:00pm and played for a solid forty-five minutes, inspiring everyone there to keep dancing for the entire show. They played many fan favorites from their last album, Keep Your Eyes Ahead, as well as a chunk of tracks from the new album. It made a perfect accompaniment to an (almost) snowy Wednesday night.
I also had the opportunity to interview Brandon Summers before their show that night and talk about the creation process behind the new album, their favorite band of the past few years and much more. That exclusive interview is provided below for your listening pleasure!
