With a string of bands playing Friday night on March 7th at Mud and Water, Incan Abraham kicked off the night with some pop glory filled with various synths and textures. Their homegrown Los Angeles sound is evident with reflective guitar/keyboard soundscapes infused in tribal vigor. The two lead singers provided beautiful melodies to sweeten the already endearing pop songs.
The most charming part of Incan Abraham is their on stage chemistry. Vocalist and guitarist Teddy Cafaro met bass player Spencer Mandel at Mommy & Me as kindergarteners in Los Angeles while other mates Giules Pizzulo, vocalist and keys, and drummer Andrew Clinco grew up across town. The childhood friends spent one dynamic month of tracking in upstate New York before returning home to LA to polish their sound. Since, Incan Abraham has released three EPs, all which can be downloaded free of charge on their site.
Their past EPs have received serious attention including acclaimed festival sets across the country. Although having their own ardent fan base, music lovers have regularly compared Incan Abraham to bands such as Animal Collective, Beach House, Tame Impala and Grizzly Bear due to their harmonies, guitar figures, and psych wiggles, but their show at Mud and Water made me forget all comparisons. The fellas sampled their upcoming debut album Tolerance with songs “Springhouse,” “Concorde,” and “Tuolumne.” Their live shows prove that the band is done mirroring their influences, and found their own singular sound through flexible rhythms, textural experimentation, and instrumental interdependence.
Listen to my interview with Incan Abraham below, and check out their debut album Tolerance out April 8th on White Iris Records.
