Only a few weeks removed from Mobile World Congress, and there isn’t a whole lot to talk about. But if you’re an iOS user, there’s something you should know.
1. Apple releases iOS 7.1
Yes there’s an update for iOS 7 and yes you should download it.
The change log Apple gives is pretty simple — updates to iTunes Radio, the inclusion of CarPlay (basically an iOS version of a cars navigation screen) and various bug fixes.
But, there were a few significant UI tweaks that improve the operating system.
For one, iOS 7 no longer randomly reboots (in theory). If you’re like me, one minute you’re typing up a text and the next, you’re staring at the Apple icon on your phone. It was an odd bug that plagued users from launch day, but 7.1 should fix that issue.
Secondly, it bolds certain fonts around the OS, making certain things more visible. The most obvious example is the “No Notifications” group when Notification Center is empty, but there are other instances around the OS.
More aesthetic changes include a different shade of green for Messages and Phone (juicy, I know) and rounder buttons and icons (for Phone and the “slide to turn off” switch especially).
The update also adds the ability to pick when you want Siri to stop listening to you. Just hold down the home button while you say a command, then release it when you’re done speaking. No more waiting for Siri to hopefully realize you’ve stopped talking.
But by far the best feature is that it finally makes iOS 7’s zoomy, swoopy, free-flowing navigation between apps quicker. So if you want quick response while switching or opening apps, you don’t need to turn on “Reduce Motion” in Settings anymore. Moving between apps is noticeably faster and smoother.
Finally, the update should make iOS 7 less of an issue on the iPhone 4. It’s typical of Apple to make the oldest device currently available almost incompatible with the newest firmware, but this update should alleviate some of the issues iPhone 4 users were having.
If you haven’t been prompted for the update yet, you can manually trigger it by entering Settings, then General, then Software Update
