An eclectic crowd piled in to the Varsity theatre Tuesday night to witness Texas-born pop vocalist Joseph Somers Morales, better known as SoMo.
Before the doors of the Varsity even opened at 8pm, the line for his pre-show meet and greet was wrapped several yards passed Raising Canes. SoMo’s fifty-minute set began at 10:30pm. He opened the show with an original song “Kings & Queen’s (Throw It Up)” from his 2013 independent record “My Life.”
SoMo did not waste any time in promoting his self-titled debut album. The album launches April 8th, yet SoMo gave the Varsity goers a preview of some of his new songs. Standouts included “Show Off,” “Fire,” and the up-beat, piano heavy tune “Hush.”
Early in to the set, SoMo transitioned in to a slew of crowd-pleasing covers including J. Cole’s “Workout” and Drake’s “Take Care.”
He also performed several erotic R&B songs: “Bad” by Wale, “Pony” by Genuine, “Sure Thing” by Miguel. SoMo’s reputation of suggestive music precedes him. Especially since the audience most likely had only heard SoMo’s sensual single “Ride,” his closing song, before attending the show Tuesday night. SoMo did not disappoint the bump-n-grind enthusiasts. He even joked with the crowd saying that we all had a pretty good idea about what he liked to sing about.
Overall, the energy of the show was more playful than overly sexual. He played with the audience and they cooed back when he flashed his six-pack and made suggestive movements. His music has a feel of both pop and R&B influence, but there is also a cool touch of soul that may set him a part from other upcoming artists in his genre.
SoMo is on the brink of a successful career. Critics may say his songs are “cheesy” or lack depth, but no artist can please everyone. SoMo put on a fun and entertaining show, and there is not much more to ask of him than that. I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot more of him in the months following his album release.
He seems like a genuine guy, passionate about what he does, but I am glad I was not in the middle of the cat fight for his coveted black shirt, which he threw from his back at the close of his show.
