The computer labs in Middleton Library and the Student Union will not be reinstated, said Jane Cassidy, Student Technology Fee Oversight Committee chairperson, at the STF meeting Tuesday.
Regardless, the committee agreed they want students to be aware of the remaining resources on campus.
The remaining computer labs are located in 141 Middleton, with 139 computers; 1302 Patrick F. Taylor Hall, with 93 computers; and the Business Education Complex Lobby, with 15 computers.
There are also 13 rooms with printers in various buildings across campus available for student use.
The money from the lab closures has been redirected to the wireless expansion project, which will improve the wireless connection around campus.
The wireless connections in the Union and Coates Hall have already been updated for a total cost of $203,449. However, only $140,000 was funded by the Student Technology Fee. The remaining cost was covered by University Information Technology Services funds.
Buildings currently being updated include Campbell Auditorium, Middleton and Lockett Hall.
Future updates include Tureaud Hall, the BEC, Howe-Russell, the Design building, Allen Hall, Williams Hall and Nicholson Hall.
The committee stressed the importance of programs like Gear 2 Geaux, an STF-funded program that allows students to rent mobile computing devices like laptops, iPads and camcorders for free. Students can rent the electronics from the Middleton Circulation Desk and 1302 Patrick F. Taylor.
The committee also brought back a $1 million discipline-specific grant after a four-year hiatus due to a lack of funding. The grant funds technological proposals from different colleges and departments. The Daily Reveille previously reported that in 2010, this grant gave the Honors College $7,299 to replace an audio/visual cart that was about 10 years old.
