A first smash hit always leaves expectations for a much awaited second release. Purity ring, a Canadian electronic music duo heralding from Edmonton, Alberta has followed up their first success with the release of their new album “Another Eternity”. Released March 3, 2015 the duo delivered their signature pop punch, but there is a lack of inventiveness that came with the first album. Another Eternity drifts into main stream pop and electronic sounds, and has lost some of their uniqueness that they help to brand. Though there might have been missed opportunity for the artist to expand upon their growing sound, listen fans certainly won’t be disappointed by the new album.
With tones similar to the sounds from Lana Del Rey’s first album tracks like “Body ache” offer up that sweet plinky piano sound paired with singer Megan James’s pleading vocals reaching gentle drops provided by Corin Roddick. “Push and Pull” speaks to this same nature, the honest feelings the two offer up are lightened by poppy synth beats all the while maintaining a seriousness that allows a mix of slow and fast that the duo mastered on their freshman album. “Stranger than earth” has familiar tones similar to pieces of Childish Gambino’s work and while James’s lyrical beat will be favored by fans of Jhené Aiko. The two have definitely refined their R&B sound while keeping much of their virtual sound focusing their lyrics on a blend of spiritual and physical all manifested beautifully on Another Eternity. While making their sound more accessible Purity Ring concedes mainstream sounds they’ve also challenged their work and brought out a bolder more sure Purity Ring sound.
