This week’s episode of “The Following” began with a startled Ryan after he awoke from a dream where he found Gwen shoved inside one of the steel boxes, crying for help. This event leads into the FBI’s task for the episode — finding who’s responsible for Agent Clarke’s death.
In an FBI press conference, Daisy and Kyle discover they are suspects in Clarke’s death. Ryan blames the death on Mark and suggests he turn himself in before the FBI finds him. After the conference, Ryan finds Clarke’s wife Anna, who blames him for the death of her husband because he died protecting Ryan’s secret.
Meanwhile, Neil, the box-making murderer, returns home to discover his father is missing but finds him down the street searching for his dead wife because of his dementia. His caretaker apologizes for him running off, but Neil doesn’t accept her apology. Instead, he calls the agency and reports her missing, and she ends up tied up in his workshop.
After seeing the press release, Mark kidnaps the media, kills one of them and forces the other one to interview him about his plans. Little does he know, Daisy and Kyle are in cahoots with another source as well and are in the works to harm Max.
Ryan, Mike and Max find the warehouse of a man who has been speaking with Neil over email which eventually leads them to Neil’s shop.
It’s revealed that Neil is a carpenter who’s taken over his father’s shop and makes wooden toy chests. He’s preparing a toy chest for someone named Billy, but he has plans to use it for the nurse he’s holding hostage. It’s revealed Neil was abused as a child but believes it was out of love, which is why he wants to punish the nurse for neglecting his father.
Luckily, Ryan’s entrance prevents him from killing her because he takes off running. He kills his father’s new nurse, and he and his father escape as the cops arrive to his home. An angry Neil threatens to harm Daisy and Kyle because they involved him in their scheming.
The FBI raid the home and discover Neil’s father has dementia because everything is labled, which means he may be wearing a tracking device. They follow the signal and find the two at a nearby flea market. Neil finally remembers the device and gives it to a child there, and they attempt to leave the scene.
Neil kills an innocent man for his car, but his father watches the entire event and goes into a panic. Ryan hears this and runs over to stop Neil, but he leaves without his father. Ryan, Mike and Max chase him down and run him off the road. Neil says Ryan is to blame for his poor relationship with his father.
Neil goes to shoot Ryan, but Max kills him first, which is a practice she wasn’t totally supportive of in previous episodes.
The reporter interviewing Mark tries to convince Mark that Daisy and Kyle are really against him, and when he walks away to confront them, she runs away. Kyle catches her and Daisy stabs her, but Mark insists he finish the interview with the body.
Mark finds the file with Max’s info and they tell Mark that her information was a present for him after he was upset by the press conference. Things are calm again between the three again, but Mark’s imagination of his brother, Luke, warns him to be wary of the two.
Back at the bureau, a ceremony is held in honor of Agent Clarke. Mike doesn’t show up because he feels responsible for Clarke’s death and isn’t sure how to face him again.
Ryan asks Gwen to move in with him, regardless of any stress it may bring. Gwen agrees, but only if Ryan promises to not keep any secrets from her.
The episode ends with Daisy and Kyle breaking into Max’s apartment to set up cameras to keep an eye on her, and she almost walks in on them, but her boyfriend offers to take her to dinner right outside her doorstep.
