This week, “The Following” released two episodes.
The first episode opened with a young college couple on their way home when Daisy and Kyle corner the boy and push him in front of a car, in an effort to make his death look like an accident. This gruesome act is only the beginning of their overall plan.
Meanwhile, Gwen moves in with Ryan, complete with her stock of alcohol. She apologizes when she remembers Ryan, a former alcoholic, is about two years sober. He reassures her she’s fine, but stocks the cabinet with her supply.
Back at the bureau, Ryan finds the address for a house registered to Daisy and Kyle, and he and Max go to investigate. The home is too perfect and too clean, which helps the couple function between their double lives. They find an underground bunker behind the house with mannequins dressed in a random assortment of blood-stained clothing — mementos from their kills.
A young girl named Emily finds Ryan and Max and tells them she’s dogsitting for the couple. Ryan has her call Daisy to tell her the dog’s been injured so the FBI can trace the call. Unfortunately, Kyle catches on to their plan and threatens to come for Ryan’s family.
After their phone call, Daisy, dressed in one of her many disguises, visits a local fire station and flirts with one of the firefighters there while Mark and Kyle kill the others, and she eventually kills the man she was speaking with. When the police arrive, Mark left them a message in blood reading “heroes die while you lie.”
Max’s father used to be a firefighter there before he died, and she’s upset about the deaths in the place where she used to spend her days growing up. A distraught Max asks Mike to come over that night, and Daisy and Kyle watch as the two rekindle their flame.
The next day, the police connect Mark, Daisy and Kyle to the firehouse murders. While Daisy and Kyle are out, a suspicious Mark searches their bedroom. He finds the video of Max and overhears that the FBI found the location of his safe house, and he manages to escape before they arrive. In a panic, he tries to reach the couple, but they are ignoring him.
In the house, the FBI find the class schedule of a girl, who happens to be the girlfriend from the couple at the beginning of the episode. Daisy fakes a suicide note and plans to push the girl off the roof, but Ryan, Mike and Max arrive in time. Daisy beats Mike with a pipe and leaves him dangling from the roof. Tom, Max’s boyfriend who saw the video of Mike and Max when they raided Mark’s house, hesitates before helping rescue Mike.
Turns out, the girl’s mother was set to be the judge in an upcoming trial for Dr. Strauss. The entire plan was to kill the judge’s daughter so she would step down and a more lenient judge would be her substitute.
The beginning of the second episode begins with Ryan talking to Dr. Strauss on a prison bus about the upcoming trial. Strauss, evil as always, isn’t too worried about the outcome.
Mark, Daisy and Kyle are all in a hotel room that Mark set aside to keep them safe because they’re all wanted by the FBI. Daisy asks Mark to buy medical supplies so she can take care of Kyle, who’s suffering from a gunshot wound from the debacle on the roof. As soon as Mark leaves, a weak Kyle pops up ready to carry out their plan.
Daisy and Kyle sneak out to meet with Juliana, who’s feeding them information on behalf of Strauss. Mark sees them leave and grows angry with the duo he thought were his friends.
During the trial, Ryan and journalist, Carrie Cooke, will testify against Strauss. Because of this, Daisy and Kyle are on a mission to kill Cooke before she appears in court. Before she arrives, Strauss’ attorney presents a planted email from Agent Clarke, who was killed earlier this season, concerning what happened during last season’s murders.
Unless Ryan and the court can produce Cooke within one hour, Strauss will walk. Ryan, Mike and Max find her room, but all that’s left is a bleached room that was once filled with blood. Daisy and Kyle killed Cooke’s security detail and took her with them.
The three find a burning van not too far from the hotel with Cooke’s body inside. Ryan’s beside himself, but continues to pursue Daisy and a bleeding Kyle. Unable to climb the fence to escape, Kyle begs Daisy to go on without him, and she does. He then pulls out the knife he killed Cooke with and charges Ryan, who shoots him dead. Kyle dies whispering Daisy’s name.
By the time Ryan calls the attorney, it’s too late. Wallace dismissed the case and Strauss is a free man. Agent Mendez is supposed to suspend Ryan, Mike and Max for their behavior but gives them until the morning to find Strauss.
Meanwhile, Mark is still angry with Juliana for her work involving Daisy and Kyle. He follows her to her apartment, ties her up, burns her with an iron and kills her, but not before he finds out Daisy and Kyle were Strauss’ students, just like Joe Carroll.
Daisy runs into Strauss and tries to kill him because she blamed him for Kyle’s death. He gives her the option to either leave the country with him or he’ll kill her so she can be with Kyle. She chooses to leave with him, but on their way out, they run into Ryan.
Mark is also there hiding at the scene and attempts to shoot Mike. This is when all hell breaks loose. Mike and Max catch up to Strauss, but Mike sees Mark in the distance and leaves Max to arrest him. While she attempts to contain Strauss, Daisy hits her over the head with a piece of wood and beats her repeatedly.
Mike’s chasing Mark and is about to shoot him when Ryan appears and begs him not to. Mike’s conscious eventually gets the best of him and he lets Mark live, but Mark jumps over the side of the ship they were standing on and gets away. An angry Mike yells at Ryan for letting Mark go until they receive a call about Max.
She’s rushed to the emergency room, but she will be fine. Ryan blames Mike for leaving her alone, and Mike reminds him he would have done the same thing if he were chasing Joe.
The episode ends with a twist that’s been a long time coming. Ryan makes the decision to visit an old enemy of his to devise a way to beat Strauss, and with that, Joe Carroll is back.
